Raised Beds Galore

In Peebles, a recent garden transformation project was undertaken, focusing on the installation of raised beds. The primary aim was to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional space for the homeowners, who were eager to cultivate their own vegetables and herbs.

The project commenced with a thoughtful design phase, where the landscaping team assessed the site's unique characteristics, including sunlight exposure, soil quality, and existing vegetation. To enhance the garden's productivity and visual appeal, we decided to incorporate three distinct raised beds—each designed to suit different types of plants.

Materials were carefully selected to ensure durability and complement the natural surroundings. We opted for treated timber for the raised beds, providing a rustic charm that harmonised with the home’s exterior. The beds were constructed at a height that facilitated easy access for planting and maintenance, which is particularly beneficial for those with mobility concerns.

Once the frames were built, quality topsoil was sourced to fill the beds, enriched with organic compost to promote healthy plant growth. This organic matter not only nourished the soil but also improved drainage, an essential factor in the often variable Scottish climate.

With the raised beds in place, the homeowners were involved in selecting suitable crops and herbs to grow. Varieties such as tomatoes, lettuce, and basil were chosen for their compatibility with the season and their ability to flourish in raised conditions. Additionally, we incorporated a companion planting strategy to maximise space and enhance growth.

To complete the project, pathways made from gravel were laid between the raised beds, providing easy access for care and maintenance while ensuring adequate drainage. Low decorative fencing was added around the perimeter to delineate the space and provide protection against local wildlife.

This garden project not only transformed an underutilised area into a productive landscape but also empowered the homeowners to engage in sustainable gardening practices. The raised beds have since flourished, showcasing the beauty of home-grown produce and contributing to the overall ambience of their property in Peebles.
