Small Garden Transformation
We were commissioned to transform a small, somewhat neglected garden area in Edinburgh that presented as a half-slab, half-weedy-pebble strip into a bright, comfortable and low-maintenance outdoor space.
The client’s brief was straightforward: create a clean, attractive area that requires minimal upkeep while complementing the existing lower patio.
Site condition before work
Surface was split between old concrete slabs and a gravel/pebble area that had become overgrown with weeds and moss.
Existing lower patio was serviceable but dirty and dulled by embedded grime, algae and weather staining.
Drainage and levels were adequate but edges and transitions were untidy, and there was no definition or cohesive finish between the different surfaces.
Our client wanted a low-maintenance result with a neat, modern appearance and a durable surface suitable for light outdoor furniture.
Design approach and objectives
Simplify the space and create clear visual definition using durable, low-maintenance materials.
Introduce a low-care green element to provide colour and softness without the need for mowing or regular lawn care.
Rejuvenate and harmonise the existing patio by deep cleaning and repairing where necessary, so the whole area reads as a single, finished space.
Ensure durable preparation and installation so the finished area performs well for years with minimal maintenance.
Materials and craftsmanship
Artificial turf: high-density, UV-stabilised, chosen for realistic texture and colour retention.
Sandstone: light/bright tone selected to lift the area and enhance daylight reflection; cut and laid to tight tolerances for a premium look.
Sub-base: compacted aggregate to industry standards to prevent settlement and ensure long life.
Edging and fixings: corrosion-resistant and set to provide a long-lasting, neat junction between surfaces.
Why this solution works
Low maintenance: artificial grass removes the need for mowing, regular lawn treatments and weeding typical of a traditional lawn. Sandstone paving is hard-wearing and simple to keep clean.
Visual impact: the contrast between bright sandstone and fresh green turf creates a crisp, contemporary aesthetic that makes a small garden feel fresher and more inviting.
Durability: quality materials and correct preparation reduce future maintenance, settlement and edge movement.
Practicality: the area is suitable for seating, pots and lightweight outdoor use without risk of mud or ongoing plant maintenance.
Client outcome and feedback
The client received a clean, low-maintenance outdoor area exactly as requested.
Improvements noted: immediate uplift in appearance, easier to keep tidy, and the client loves it!
